The morning of July 26th began with the kind of rain that usually sends everyone straight back to bed. Thick clouds, the steady patter on windows, perfect binge-watch weather. But on Juhu Beach, something else was brewing. As the skies began to clear and the tide pulled back, we laced up our boots, tugged on our gloves, and took a deep breath. This was it, the day Green Pistachio’s Great Beach Clean-Up kicked off.

A Shoot for a Mission – Beach Cleanup

The idea didn’t come out of nowhere. Earlier this July, Plastic-Free July, no less- we were shooting a video on ocean pollution for Green Pistachio. The goal was simple: show the reality of ocean plastic pollution and start a conversation. But when we reached Juhu Beach for a few shots, we were hit with a gut punch. That’s when our founder took it into her own hands and orchestrated a solo clean-up. While we were fuming at the current conditions of our oceans, we realised we had to do something.

And just like that, a video campaign turned into something bigger. To get others in on the action, we planned the clean-up, rallied partners, coordinated volunteers, and told our community, “We’re cleaning up Juhu. Come get your hands dirty.

The Starting Line

There was sand, the sea, and trash, layers of it, tangled and half-buried. For every soggy wrapper we uncovered, we also uncovered something else. Momentum. Energy. Commitment. People came, not just for a cause, but with one. Some brought friends. Some brought families. Some came solo, quietly picking their way along the shore with grim determination. Every pair of gloves on that beach was another reminder that change comes from showing up.

The Littlest Leaders for Beach Cleanup

Among our volunteers were two kids around ten, armed with tiny gloves, oversized enthusiasm, and the kind of focus I usually only have after three coffees. They zipped past adults, fearlessly picking up trash like it was treasure. Watching them, it hit me: if they can do it, what’s our excuse? I saw in them a message from the future, loud and clear: our habits are their inheritance.

The Great Beach Cleanup – A Day to Remember

We had collected bag after bag of waste, plastic, textiles, and the occasional mystery object. It’s hard to explain the feeling of seeing a space transform before your eyes. Pride? Yes. Relief? Absolutely. But also a weird, glowing sense of hope. Maybe we’re not too late.

At Green Pistachio, we talk a lot about sustainability, about circularity, about what it means to live with less waste. But on that day, it wasn’t about brand messaging or perfect aesthetics. It was about backing up our values with action.

The Tide Turners

5Rcycle provided gloves, collection bags, and all the tools we needed to dig deep. They also ensured that everything we collected was sorted and disposed of responsibly. The process was as smooth as it was impactful.

People didn’t wait for instructions; they took initiative. What started as a soggy Saturday soon became something electric.

The Finish Line

By the end, grinning through damp clothes and sandy boots, our participants had collected 100 kilos of waste. But what really shone through was their spirit. It wasn’t just about picking up trash. It was about showing up and stepping up.

And for a few of the participants, it went even deeper. Here’s what they had to say about the experience:

Beach Testimonial - 1

Author’s Testimonial

Being a part of The Great Beach Clean Up was a meaningful experience that will always inspire me going forward. It gives me hope for what’s ahead and makes me proud to be a part of it.

Not Just a One-Off

The clean-up was a highlight of Plastic-Free July, but we’re not hanging up our gloves just yet. This was the first of many. Once you’ve seen what’s possible with a few hours, a few people, and a lot of stubborn optimism, it’s hard to go back to business as usual.

So here’s to the next clean-up, the next crew, and the next step.
