Channel Your Inner Camel With Our Epic Water Footprint Challenge
Hello fellow planeteers! We hope you’re NOT enjoying this early summer meltdown—because let’s be honest, neither is our dear Gaia. It’s only March, yet the sun’s already out here acting like it’s got a personal vendetta against us. And who knows if the rains will be fashionably late or decide to surprise us early? So, let’s turn March into the Month of Water Conservation with our Water Footprint Challenge—because, let’s face it, every drop counts!
Eco-Conscious Festive Cheer
With Holi just around the corner, we get it — those water guns can be hard to resist! But if you go a little overboard with the splashing, don’t sweat it! Our Water Footprint Challenge is here to help you balance out your festive water splurges. By taking on this challenge, you’ll not only make up for the extra splashes but also join WWF-India’s #BeWaterWise initiative, contributing to the protection of our precious freshwater resources. So go ahead, enjoy Holi — and let’s give back to the planet, one mindful splash at a time!

This year’s Earth Hour isn’t just about switching off lights—it’s about switching on your “I’m-saving-water-like-a-boss” mode! With Earth Hour and World Water Day teaming up on March 22, it’s your cue to shine bright and save water right!
Water Footprint Challenge
Your water footprint is the total amount of water you use—both directly (drinking, bathing, cooking, washing) and indirectly (clothing, transportation, food, and other goods and services).
You can calculate your water footprint using this simple calculator by Water Footprint Network.
Cutting your water footprint doesn’t have to be boring. So, take the Water Footprint Challenge — a fun and innovative way to save water while keeping the festive vibes high.
Mission 1: Capture and Store Hidden Water

Challenge: Be a water detective!
Task 1: Use cooled rice/pasta water to ferment probiotic drinks like kanji or refresh your sourdough starter. Bonus: It’s a great plant booster too!
Task 2: Trap steam condensation by placing a lid over pots while cooking. Tilt the lid to collect the droplets—then reuse this hidden water for watering plants, refilling pet bowls (if unseasoned), or nourishing your compost.
Mission 2: Circular Water Economy

Challenge: Recycle like a pro!
Task 1: Grow mushrooms in spent coffee grounds—as they grow, they’ll release moisture that can be used for growing microgreens. No waste, just nutrient-packed goodness!
Task 2: Create a rain garden using native plants to trap and filter rainwater. It prevents runoff, replenishes groundwater, and creates a self-sustaining ecosystem. Rainwater’s new gig? Staying in the loop and nourishing your garden the circular way!
Mission 3: Flip The Laundry Game
Challenge: Become a laundry wizard!
Task 1: Try an ultrasonic cleaning pen to zap stains without soaking or wasting gallons of water. It’s eco-friendly and super effective!
Task 2: Make an enzyme-based laundry spray by mixing 1:1 enzyme detergent and water. Spray stains directly, skip extra detergent, and use shorter wash cycles. Clothes stay fresh, and your water footprint shrinks!
Mission 4: Repurpose Greywater

Challenge: Waste less, reuse more!
Task 1: Use leftover Epsom salt or herbal bathwater for mopping floors or flushing toilets. No need to drain the tub—just scoop it into a bucket!
Task 2: Redirect rinse water from your washing machine into a storage drum. Use it for pre-soaking laundry or mopping floors—less waste, more impact!
Mission 5: Celebrate Earth Hour ‘25 with a beach clean-up
Challenge: Come together and champion water conservation!
Task 1: Register for this event – https://people4planet.wwfindia.org/project.php?pid=625
Task 2: Join WWF-India to help make Prabhadevi Beach plastic-free on March 22, 2025 at 7:30 AM and learn about why it’s important to keep our oceans, rivers and water bodies clean and healthy.
Taking Sustainability To The Next Level with WWF India
WWF-India has long been at the forefront of water conservation efforts, working to revitalise rivers and wetlands, conserve freshwater species, and promote responsible water usage. Their initiatives include river basin management, wetland restoration, and footprint reduction programmes, aiming to secure freshwater for nature and people alike.
Coincidentally, March 14 is also the International Day of Action for Rivers, a global event dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of healthy rivers and advocating for their sustainable management. This observance aligns seamlessly with WWF-India’s longstanding commitment to water conservation, and to inspire individuals, communities, and organisations to #BeWaterWise and contribute towards safeguarding our freshwater resources.
WWF-India’s Rivers for Life, Life for Rivers programme focuses on giving the Ganga a healthier future — rich in biodiversity, cleaner waters, and smarter water management. Backed by the HSBC Water Programme, a massive USD 100 million CSR initiative, this project brings together HSBC, WWF, WaterAid, and Earthwatch to improve water security across key river basins. Since its launch in 2012, it’s been working to improve water management, protect ecosystems, and provide safer water access to communities. In its next phase, the project is zeroing in on the Ganga’s tributaries, ensuring they stay healthy for people, businesses, and the planet.
Water conservation isn’t just about cutting back—it’s about using water wisely. The Zero-Waste Water Footprint Challenge pushes sustainability further by embracing innovative, circular economy-inspired strategies to keep every drop in action and eliminate waste for good.
