So, let’s keep the vibes flowing as we explore sustainable living, featuring a DIY rainwater harvesting story from the newest member of our eco-fam that takes a walk down memory lane and highlights how it promotes environmental awareness.

Sowing Seeds of Sustainability: A Grandfather’s Legacy

It’s only been a month that I’ve been a part of this amazing team, but their passion for sustainability instantly resonated with me. Perhaps it’s because growing up, my grandfather taught me the importance of caring for nature and staying optimistic, values that align perfectly with Green Pistachio’s vision. This platform helps connect my past and present for a greener future, and that has really inspired me to share this personal story with all of you.

Join me as I reminisce about a poignant childhood memory—one that has stayed with me through the years and continues to inspire my journey into a more sustainable way of living. I hope it resonates with you and sparks a little inspiration to embrace eco-friendly choices in your own way, whether by guiding the next gen or taking small yet impactful steps toward a greener future.

A fond reflection

A Fond Reflection

Some days, you just want to sit on your porch swing, a warm cup of coffee in hand, pretending to read a book, while your mind drifts to old memories. Today was one of those days for me. I found myself reflecting on the good old times when I’d been working alongside my grandfather. Back then, I thought I was a superhero—though in reality, I was simply handing him tools or holding supplies as he worked on his upcycling, recycling, and repurposing projects. Together, we were a team, crafting a better tomorrow. Yet, now, as I sit here, it hits me—those summer days weren’t just about fixing things—they were about building memories that would last a lifetime.

DIY Sustainability: How it Started

We lived in a small, charming town, in a sprawling bungalow. My grandfather, a self-made mechanical engineer, was a man of grit and determination. During my early childhood, he was always off on some expedition. I remember wrapping my arms around him tightly when he returned—not asking for treats, but simply craving his presence. I miss that so much now. When he announced his retirement, I was over the moon, practically flying through the three-story bungalow like a kid who had just unwrapped the perfect present.

But little did I know, his retirement wouldn’t be filled with storytelling from his adventurous days. Instead, it became a world of repairs, chopping down dead trees (and giving them a second chance to grow), building sheds, enriching the soil, and pouring his time, energy, and sweat into DIY projects.

The Essence of Sustainability

One project that stands out in my memory is the rainwater harvesting system he set up. Growing up, I experienced water shortages firsthand, and his efforts to make life better for us—the next gen—were nothing short of genius. He didn’t just talk about making a difference; he led by example.

Looking back, I realize he did something I could never have imagined as a child: he didn’t just fix a problem; he showed us how to be part of the solution. That’s the essence of sustainability, isn’t it? It’s not about quick fixes, but about making thoughtful, eco-friendly choices for a better future.

Harvesting Rainwater – Our Green Efforts

Rainwater harvesting was like magic to the people of our small town. My grandfather and I would carry materials – old pipes, torn nets, collections of rocks, and heaps of sand, or “junk” as they called it, from one end of town to the other. To them, it seemed odd, but we were gathering tools for something that would change how they saw summer—a season once feared for its water scarcity.

Green Efforts

Now, if you are planning to undertake a DIY rainwater harvesting project, fret not! All the supplies are more accessible than ever, and you can often find what you need from local construction sites, online community groups, or even your neighbours who might have spare materials lying around.

DIY Sustainability

Assessing the Catchment Area

We began by clearing the side pavement and cleaning the terrace, carefully evaluating the slope of the catchment area to make sure the water would flow just right. Then, we drilled two outlets into the terrace wall to let the rainwater flow out smoothly.

Installing the Downpipes

This was a particularly fun part for me. While my grandfather figured out how to secure the pipes in the two outlets so they wouldn’t budge during heavy rains, I was busy playing my “talking tubes” game. Once the pipes were set, we moved on to the next step.

DIY Water Filtration System

The rainwater we collected from the terrace wasn’t drinkable. It had dirt and other impurities, so we had to filter it before storing it for everyday use. We used pebbles, gravel, sand, and some locally sourced filter materials to clean it up and store it for daily use.

Eco-friendly Water Storage

For storing the filtered rainwater, we went full eco-mode. No plastic, just recycled tanks and durable, natural containers. We even dug up some dry land nearby (and made sheds to cover it – another story, another time) to store extra water for the whole town. That extra water came in handy for watering plants and the kitchen garden when water was running low.

Tank and Pipe TLC

We made sure to regularly scrub the storage tanks and flush out the pipes to avoid any build-up or clogs. This kept the system running smoothly and the water fresh. This was the most fun I had, as I got to play with soap and water for as long I as wished!

Gratitude & Green Vibes

Grateful

Even though I was an eco-noob back then, my grandfather was the ultimate green guru. His wild ideas and practical actions have had such a big impact on me—and looking back, I know it’s made a real difference for the planet too.

I couldn’t say it back then, but now, I’ll say it loud and clear: A huge, heartfelt thank you!

This is my story that still motivates me. Got your own inspo or someone who’s changing the game? We’re all ears! Hit us up in the DMs.
