This year marks India’s 80th Independence Day. Back then, the fight was against British rule. Today? It’s against an algorithm that tells us how to live, what to buy, and who to put on a pedestal. Influencer culture is low-key controlling our entire lifestyle and we’re not having it. So, this Independence Day, let’s take back control, unfollow the fake hype, and break free from the influencer trap.

Think about it: how often have you discovered a new product, restaurant or trend because an influencer told you about it? But how often does it actually live up to the way they make it sound?

The problem is, influencer culture doesn’t stop at products and trends anymore. Content creators are now stepping into areas far beyond their expertise—offering medical advice, astrology predictions, questionable webinars, and even presenting opinions as facts without any evidence to back them up. And because we see this content so often, it can feel credible—even when it really isn’t.

So, are you ready for some influencer independence? Let’s get started!

Independence Day Challenge: Freedom from the Influence of the Feed

Week 1

Challenge: Freedom from Believing

For the next 7 days, pick one influencer claim that catches your attention and fact-check it. Spend 5 minutes checking who said it, what evidence supports it, and whether independent, credible sources agree, and then do something with what you find. If it checks out, share it. If it doesn’t, don’t just scroll past—report it or share the correct information instead.

Take a cue from creators like Krish Ashok, whose Masala Lab reels often take everyday food beliefs and claims and put them under the microscope. And perhaps that’s the kind of independence our feeds could use a little more of.

Week 2

Challenge: Freedom from Buying

This week, before buying an influencer-recommended product, pause for a second. Ask yourself if you actually need it—check the ingredients, read real reviews, compare alternatives, and check the price. If you still want it after doing your own research, make that final call without the influencer’s voice in your head.

A great example is Revant Himatsingka (FoodPharmer), who shows people how to look beyond glossy packaging and question what’s actually being sold. So before an influencer guides your cart, take a closer look. You don’t need their green light to make a smart choice.

Week 3

Challenge: Freedom from Following

This week, whenever you spot words like eco-friendly, conscious, natural, planet-friendly or sustainable, mark them down. Question it, DM the creator, call it out or share what you discovered. One small action could help turn a questionable claim into a conversation—and stop greenwashing from becoming just another trend.

Scroll through @conscious.spend, and you’ll see ethical choices in a whole new light. With independent, data-backed ratings, you can see past the marketing hype and actually know where your money goes. So next time your feed points you towards a “green” choice, remember: you’re allowed to say, “Not todaythis one.”

Week 4

Challenge: Freedom from Fake Authority

For seven days, keep an eye out for influencers using lab coats, fancy titles, complicated jargon, dramatic statistics or even a huge follower count to make their advice sound more credible. Before you believe them, check their stated qualifications, verify them through the relevant institution or professional body, and confirm their expertise matches the subject they’re talking about. If it doesn’t, think twice before taking their advice at face value.

Dr Manan Vora gets this right. As an orthopaedic surgeon and health educator, he creates content around health myths and misinformation—subjects that connect directly with his professional expertise. His qualifications and area of expertise are clearly stated, making it easier for audiences to understand why he’s qualified to speak on these topics.

So, Are You Ready to Be Free Again?

At the end of the day, a confident voice doesn’t automatically make someone an expert. Following creators for entertainment and accurate info is completely fine, but letting an algorithm dictate your choices, health, and spending isn’t. Because your decisions, your money, and your health should be driven by real facts—not sponsored scripts.

Try this challenge for one week at a time and watch your feed transform within a month. As you start filtering out self-proclaimed experts, viral myths, and unbacked claims, you’ll begin seeing credible, high-value, and meaningful content—the kind that informs and inspires you, rather than misguiding you, feeding into myths, or trying to sell you something.
